A lot of miles

roswell

Well we’ve been quite busy these last days to say the least. We began our journey last Monday and have been 5 days on the road. We have driven through Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico and currently we are staying at a hotel in Grand Canyon, Arizona.
This has been a remarkable trip, America is so diverse in landscape, atmosphere and climate. We have mainly kept to the Interstates, first the Interstate 10 and then number 40, which follows old route 66. Sometimes we have strayed off onto the Highways, usually to reach a destination that is not beside an Interstate.
We visited the Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, very dramatic and huge. This first part of the journey has been more about driving than sightseeing, we wanted to rush trough Texas and the Midwest and save our time for places like the Grand Canyon, Death Valley and Yosemite.
We spent today exploring the Grand Canyon and it is truly amazing, the view from the edge is fabulous, but I bet a hike down to the bottom would truly reveal its true splendor. That is however not possible with children as it’s a 4-mile hike and the temperatures are hovering around 40 degrees during the day.
Tomorrow we head for Death Valley, we have booked a room at a small hotel there. Death valley is supposedly the hottest place on earth so it was no problem getting a reservation in mid July!
